Tooth Extraction
Dr. Heaton is Trained as an Oral Surgeon
As a trained Oral Surgeon, Dr. Heaton performs tooth extractions when necessary.
While our permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, sometimes a tooth becomes compromised and must be removed.
What are reasons for teeth extractions? Grinding teeth due to stress and sleep apnea can put tremendous pressure on teeth and cause them to crack and break.
Infection, decay, trauma, accidents and periodontal disease are more reasons that create a need for tooth extractions. Sometimes there are too many teeth in the mouth and not enough space in the mouth to allow for proper teeth alignment. And teeth are removed for proper fit.
Dr. Heaton makes every effort possible to save a natural tooth. However, when that tooth becomes compromised past a certain point and begins to contribute to systemic disease, it is often recommended to remove the tooth.
What to Expect with Tooth Extraction
Always before pulling a tooth, the patient is made to feel comfortable. The entire procedure is explained. A numbing agent or local anesthetic is used to temporarily numb the area where the tooth will be removed. Heavier sedation techniques are available for those who require more. These help to prevent pain and will make you sleep throughout your procedure. With heavier sedation, you will need an escort to drive you home after the procedure.
The tooth area is cleared and any gum and tissue that is infected is cut away. Forceps are used to grasp the tooth and gently loosen it from the jawbone. A blood clot typically forms in the socket when the tooth is pulled. The socket is then packed with gauze to help stop any bleeding. If need be, stitches are used to close the gum tissue back up. These are often dissolving stitches and if not, then you will come back to the office and have the stitches removed at a later date.
